West Cost Railway’s project involves the installation of a heating system in the Squamish CN Roundhouse Building with lower annual greenhouse gas emissions than a conventional heating system. More specifically, this heating system is a 58-foot deep ground source geothermal heat pump. Using the clean electricity of British Columbia’s grid to harness the constant temperature deep underground, the system is able to produce the needed heat for the building with substantially less greenhouse gas emissions than traditional heating systems. Without the investment in this renewable energy heating system, the building would have been heated by conventional natural gas.
